Description

This product is designed to be hand rubbed on to raw timber, giving a finish with a hard, bright, high gloss. It will bring out amazing depth and brilliance to most timbers making the grain pop and become opalescent, vibrant, shimmering and alive. Especially when used on a fine grained, highly figure timber. And if that’s not enough it does it all in a matter of minutes.

Aussie Oil is ideal for use on most small items like pendants, brooches, earrings, small turned items that cannot be fully finished on the lathe. Pens, magnifying glass handles, compacts, key rings, letter openers, in fact almost anything made of wood you can comfortably hold in your hand to polish.

INSTRUCTIONS
For use as a friction polisher on the lathe.

Sand the wood through the grit to at least 800 grit, or higher for a more brilliant shine.

Take a piece of clean soft cloth. Flannel is ideal because it has no grain in the material to mark or scratch the surface of the paintwork.

Make a small cushion of the cloth or fold it so that you have 4 to 6 layers as a thick wad. An easy way to do this is to cut your material into 100 to 150mm squares, fold it in half and then fold it lengthwise into 3 equal parts. This gives you a nice 6 thickness piece of material that will prevent you from burning your fingers when applying the oil at high speed.

Shake the mixture vigorously until it becomes a creamy color, then add a small amount to the cloth, making sure there is just enough to cover the entire surface of the piece you wish to polish. For the outside of a small 150mm diameter bowl, use enough to cover about half of your small fingernail. With the lathe stopped, apply this evenly over the area to be polished. Turn on the lathe and using the same piece of cloth, apply light pressure to the work and slowly move the oil-soaked part of the cloth over the entire surface from top to bottom and back again. Keep doing this until your patch on the face has dried out and becomes glassy and hard. This should take no more than about 30 to 40 seconds.

If you want a brighter shine, you can apply a second and subsequent coats almost immediately by following the same steps as above. Do not sand between coats. Apply the oil directly to the previous coat. In most cases, 2-3 coats are more than enough to get a brilliant finish.
